The Fair Rubber Association is pleased to announce that Version 3.3 of the Fair Rubber Standard is now effective as of January 2025. A key update in this version is the introduction of a critical criterion on deforestation, developed through an inclusive consultation process.
Criterion 3.4.9, based on feedback from the stakeholder consultation round in September 2024 and input from Fair Rubber supplier partners in November 2024, states:
From 31 December 2020 onward, rubber plantations and farms must not cause degradation to, or conversion of, natural forests or other natural ecosystems into agricultural production or other land uses.
To ensure compliance, this criterion requires the preparation of management plans and supporting documents to demonstrate sustainable practices, the implementation of field observations to confirm adherence, and the use of remote sensing technology and geocoordinates for precise monitoring and tracking of plantations.
A guidance document has been provided to support implementation. It includes definitions of key terms such as “Natural Forest,” “No Conversion,” “Degradation,” and “Natural Ecosystem,” along with practical recommendations for compliance.
This update reflects the Fair Rubber Association’s commitment to sustainability and deforestation-free rubber production, ensuring the protection of natural ecosystems while promoting ethical trade.
